Question 1
Question 2
Question 3
A
magazine I analysed is Billboard magazine. The magazine is created by
Prometheus Global Media which also creates “The Hollywood Report”, “Film Journal
International” and “VIBE”. Prometheus Global Media publishes media content that
includes news, video, opinion, reviews,
events and style. This is similar to what is inside my magazine so I could
potentially have my magazine published by Prometheus Global Media because they
also have digital connections so my magazine could also become digitalised
which would make it more accessible to my audience.
I looked at Bauer Media Group. They produce well known magazines
such as “Q” and “KERRANG”. Based in German, Bauer operate in 15 countries worldwide
and have a portfolio of more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and
50 radio and TV stations. This would be great for my magazine as it would be
able to be taken globally alongside digital media versions of my magazine which
would make it more appealable and easily accessible to my audience as they are
in the age range where they use a lot of technology.
IPC Media are the biggest producer of media in the UK. This would
really be great an appeal to a wide range of audience’s in the UK as they are
also on digital. But to be stuck to publishing in the UK alone I think would be
bad for my magazine as it is not for one set audience but a variety from all
around the world of different ethnicities etc.
Personally I think that Bauer is the best or my magazine because
they have the most publishing around the world and the fact that it has a lot
of digital connections means that I would prefer Bauer to publish my magazine
Question 4
From the audience research that I did, I believe that my
audience will be females of 15-25 years will read my magazine. This is because these
is the kind of age group that reads pop genre magazine the most as female are
stereotypically into fashion. I think this age range is appropriate because
this age range is more likely to listen to pop genre music so they are also
more likely to read a pop magazine.
According to Young and Rubicam, my audience are the largest
audience and they interested in big established brands. They want to feel safe.
According to the socio-economic scale, my audience fit into the D, C1 or C2
categories. These people can be lower middle class to working class. I believe
that as the pop genre is so flexible that my audience spans over a few classes
rather than being in one specific class. In my magazine I am trying to present
my audience with the latest gossip. So to Blumer and Katz’s theory my audience
has cognitive need and seek acquiring information. In some ways my audience
also have social interactive needs as they talk about gossip and latest trends
which would appear in a pop genre magazine.
Question 5
I believe that my magazine appeals to my audience very well.
I think that is relevant to them in the sense that it contains most of what is
conventional for a magazine of my genre and some differences that I think would
appeal to my audience. I think that the colour codes work very well and the
design would appeal to my audience. I think it is relevant to them because it
seems like any other magazine that they have read. In my magazine I am trying
to make the magazine seem welcome and brightly coloured. This will make the
audience see it from the crowd if it was placed with other magazines. I also
used the model on the front cover as a pull to the audience. As my target
audience is young females, an attractive male on the front of my magazine would
be a pull towards my target audience the background is also relevant and
follows the style that pop music follows today which makes it conventional to
my magazine. I also have two females on the front cover as an exclusive
interview pull. This is because young females usually idolise female’s
celebrities. I have used a reverse colour switch as my text pulls on the side
of my front cover to add difference to the magazine instead of making it bland
and unattractive. This makes the central image also pop out more and also the
text as there is a huge difference in the visual effect they give so it makes
it pop out to the reader.
In my contents page I used the same colour scheme but I
different ways to make it conventional to the magazine but also to make it look
vibrant and lively. I used a box feature with alternating pink and white
colours. This makes the names of the artists stand out better in the magazine.
I also used a cut out photo of a model on the contents page that wasn’t
mentioned on the front cover. This is because it is conventional and it appear
to the audience that there is more in the magazine once it I opened up and is
also used as a pull towards my magazine. The model is also with direct mode of
address which further proves it to be a pull as the audience feel included.
In my DPS, I have used a lot of writing to get the
audience’s attention. There are images of the models with direct mode of
address to make the audience feel included. These models are what would be seen
as ‘attractive’ which would make my young female audience most likely idolise
them. I haven’t used much colour because I wanted the text to be the main focus
of the page not what is around it. I feel like for my DPS this is better
because in an interview it is expected for there to be ample amounts of text on
the pages and not much visually. I feel like this brings out the part of my
audience that seek more knowledge than gossip. I feel that the language that I
used in my DPS was appropriate to my target audience. This is because my
audience are very social and family and friends based and therefore the use of
swearing and inappropriate language was wrong so a softer more modern style of
language is used to engage with my audience.
Question 6
Question 7
When I look back at my preliminary task, I can defiantly see
a development in the quality and finish of my Front Cover, Contents Page and
DPS. I think that my understanding of magazines has improved and what elements
make a magazine of particular genres.
From working in a group on my Preliminary task, I feel like
working solo in my final has really helped me as I can decide and have full
control over every aspect of my work. However working in a group has also
taught me that the support and reliability of others is important. Every group member
must put effort in for it to work effectively.
I feel like my skills have improved since my Preliminary and
this has helped me throughout my final piece. I think the use and learnt skills
of Photoshop have improved significantly since my preliminary and this has
helped get the finish I want for my photos of my genre and I think I could
apply this skill to more than just my Pop genre I use for my final piece.
Comparisons between my Preliminary and Main task
When I created the school magazine, there was a simple and
set layout for that type of magazine. Informative and links to the type of
audience (school ages 11-18). At this point I didn’t really understand my
audience as it had not been looked into that depth yet so I created a magazine
that would appeal to me. This is a link between both my magazines as I decided
to create a magazine that wouldn’t just fit my genre but one that I might pick
up off the shelves. That’s also why I chose the pop genre.
A difference between my magazines is the fact that my
preliminary is very unprofessional. This is because I had a few weeks to create
my magazine compared to my main task which I had a few months. This has allowed
me to make my main task as professional as possible because I was able to have
more time to trial and error some designs which are shown on my blog. This has
helped me develop the best magazine I can in the time I was given.
